Then She Was Gone
|Excuse me while I go reach for the tissues! I read Lisa Jewell’s other family drama The House We Grew Up In a few years ago and was eager to read this one as well. She did not disappoint. I teared through this book so fast that at the end I was upset I finished. Sometimes books drag on and on and you can’t wait for them to end…this was not the case with this one!
Laurel Mack is finally beginning to move on. After the disappearance of her 15 year old daughter 10 years ago, she lost a lot more. She has met a charming and smart man named Floyd who comes into her life unexpectedly. Along with his quirky nine year old daughter Poppy, he helps Laurel learn to live again.
There is one thing though…Poppy looks like her daughter Ellie did at that age. This leads Laurel to bring up the past and question what happened to Ellie.
Now here’s the thing with this book, it is told in 5 parts and you pretty much know who was behind Ellie’s disappearance soon into the book. The characterization of everyone though…wow…that’s what kept me soooo engaged. Poppy is one of the most unique characters I have come across lately and I had no clue what was going to be her story or how she would grow as a character. Man, and the villain…wow….just wow. So creepy and also someone you can meet in every day life…which made them even more terrifying.
The only thing I still have a little beef about is the ending…I was just rooting for a certain couple and it didn’t happen. But… amazingly atmospheric family drama that you will not want to end!!
