Celebrating spring between all the holidays AND all of those indoor recesses can become an afterthought. When spring actually comes, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Is it flowers? Rain? Allergies?
I bet if you’re a teacher it’s actually spring break! However, let’s face it, spring break is so random all over. For some, it’s the first week or two of March. For others, it’s mid-April. I bet some districts don’t even get a spring break!
Celebrating spring can be easy because luckily there are tons of holidays that can be covered! Trust me, your students are just as antsy for spring break to arrive! Now how do you keep students engaged, address standards, cover holidays, AND have activities for those “OH NO, I need something NOW” moments (read, indoor recess)!
Survive the Spring Season With NO PREP!
Guess what, I KNOW centers are a fun way for students to practice skills, but let’s be honest. During those crazy months when you have “all the things to do” (testing, conferences, spring break prep, etc. etc.) sometimes the last thing you want to be doing is laminating and cutting out things!

Spring ELA Activities
With Blooming Blends students will read the word on the flower and color it according to the code. This is a fun way to practice those bl-, -ng, and -nd blends!
With Syllable Showers students will color the raindrops according to how many syllables the word has. Having students practice reading words with 3 syllables is a great way to improve reading skills!
With Flower Fragments, students will color the flowers according to if the sentence is a complete sentence or a fragment. After, they will pick one fragment and make it a complete sentence.
Spring Math Activities
Rainy Day Regrouping is perfect springtime practice for subtracting two-digit numbers.
Regrouping is BIG in second grade and this spring unit has several pages of regrouping including this fun St. Patrick’s Day addition activity!
Have fun teaching shapes and their attributes with Shape Sort. Perfect for Earth Day! Students will read the number of sides and vertices to match the shape or shapes to the description! This is a great way to introduce or review geometry!
Hop along and have students practice adding two 3-digit numbers with Rabbit Riddle, perfect for Easter! After solving each equation, students will find the letter that matches the answer to solve the riddle that will also induce some laughs!
Maracas and Math is a great Cinco de Mayo math activity! Students will practice solving word problems involving addition, subtraction, and arrays!
